Why do we need political parties?

  • A party may be a group of individuals who close to contest elections and hold power within the government
  • Parties attempt to persuade people why their policies are better than others
  • Through elections, they seek to implement these policies by winning popular support. 
  • A party have three components :
  1. The leaders
  2. The active members
  3. The followers

Function of a party :
  • Parties contest elections.
  • Parties suggests different policies and programs.
  • Parties play a decisive role in making laws for a rustic .
  • Parties form and run governments.
  • The role of opposition to the parties in power, by voicing different views and criticizing government for its wrong policies or failures.
  • Parties shape popular opinion .
  • Parties ease people access to government welfare schemes and machinery that is implemented by governments.


How many parties should we have?

  • There is an out sized number of political parties in each country
  • More than 750 parties are registered with EC (Election Commission)
  • How many major parties are good for a democratic country
  • A minimum of two parties to compete in elections and supply a good chance for the competing parties to return to power, in any democratic system.
  1. One party system – not good enough – China
  2. Two party system – doesn't give much choice– US
  3. Multi party system – often appears messy and results in political instability – India

One party system – China :

Pros :
  1. Quick deciding .
  2. there is no other political parties to oppose the implementation of laws.
  3. Stable political growth of the country.
  4. No money and time is wasted on political campaigns.

Cons :
  1. Against democracy.
  2. people haven't any rights and freedoms.
  3. In an election, there is no choice while voting for a candidate
  4. Country is more likely dictatorial.


Two party system – US :

Pros :
  1. It gives political stability to the country.
  2. They are not difficult to control .
  3. It is s easier for voters to choose the elections.
  4. This type of system also discourages radical minor parties.

Cons :
  1. Offers limited options to the voters.
  2. It ignores alternative voices.
  3. Creates inconsistent governing.
  4. When one party loses power, their policies are often reversed since the opposite party usually takes an opposite stand.


Multi party system - India :

Pros :
  1. It is democracy at its best.
  2. It enhances electoral transparency.
  3. It represents the voices and opinions of every section of the society.
  4. Prevents the dictatorship of one party.

Cons :
  1. Political instability because of the presence of several political parties.
  2. Decision may take much time because of the discussions.
  3. The regional parties may go for a specific region.
  4. It may cause corruption.


National political parties

National party :
  • 6%votes of total in Lok Sabha election or assembly election of 4 states.
  • At least 4 seats in Lok Sabha.
  • Party have a Office and its permanent symbol.
  • National party is additionally known recognized party.
  • BJP, INC, BSP etc.


State party :
  • 6% votes of total votes during a election of a state legislature .
  • At least 2 seats in state legislature .
  • State parties often called regional party.
  • CPI, NPP etc.


Challenges to political parties

  • People blame political parties for whatever is wrong with the working of democracy.
  • Lack of internal democracy within parties – the concentration of power in one or few leaders at the highest .
  • All members of the party don't get sufficient information on what happens inside the party.
  • The second challenge of dynastic succession is said to the primary one.
  • The third challenge is about the growing role of cash and muscle power in parties especially during election.
  • The fourth challenge is that fairly often parties don't seem to supply a meaningful option to the voters. so as to supply meaningful choice, parties must be significantly different.


How can parties be reformed

  • The Supreme Court passed an order to scale back the influence of cash and criminals. Now, it's mandatory for each candidate of a party, who contests elections, that he\she must have to file an AFFIDAVIT giving details of his property and criminal cases pending against him.
  • The committee passed an order making it necessary for political parties to carry their organizational elections and file their tax returns.
  • It should be made mandatory for political parties to offer a minimum number of tickets, about one-third, to women candidates.
  • There should be state funding of elections. The govt should give parties fund to support their election expenses.
